EYFS

The teaching of reading at Manchester Road begins as soon as the children come to our Early Years (Honey Bees, Clover Bees and Bumble Bees)

Throughout the Early Years children learn how to sound out words using synthetic phonics - a specialised program in which all our EY team are trained.

To teach phonics, the school uses ‘Read, Write, Inc’ which is a very structured approach to learning to read, write and spell.

In addition to being taught phonics, the children will also take home a library book or a school reading book. When they are ready to start reading text independently, the children will join a reading group.

A system of reading used in school is ‘reciprocal reading’ – there is extensive research behind this method, and we are excited to be using this approach to learning about text.

KS1

Once in Key Stage 1, the children continue to follow ‘read, write inc.’ for reading and spelling more complex words, and gaining a deeper understanding of how the English language works.

The children will have a session of read, write, inc. every day for one hour. During this time they are in small groups with adults who have had extensive training.

For more information about Read, write, inc. follow the link below:

All children in Year 2 visit the library and sign up to be a member if they have not already.

KS2

Reading across KS2 takes place over a 2 week cycle, each day with a specific focus.

  • Day 1, children use skills of prediction, clarify and summarise to unpick and understand a text. This day focuses on vocabulary.
  • Day 2 focuses on skills of using retrieval so children can use skim and scanning to find information.
  • Day 3, the children are using skills of inference and deduction to understand characters motives and personalities. We model and explore with the children how to  form impressions of characters or settings by using evidence from the text to make judgements.
  • Day 4, children are able to apply the skills taught over the cycle by completing a cold text.

This will be the same genre and questions will be similar so they are able to transfer skills. Children are exposed to a range of high-quality texts that are diverse , cultural and the follow the children's interests. Some link to the topics studied in History, Geography and Science.
